Baldwin County Commissioners voted Tuesday to appoint Commission Chair Sammy Hall interim county manager.

The move takes place amid the waning days of Ralph McMullen’s tenure as Baldwin County’s chief administrative officer. McMullen is set to retire on at the end of September. And at this time, commissioners have not yet selected a candidate to take McMullen’s place.

Chairman Hall:

"We had started a search some month ago and we've been going through that search process but its' been going a little slower than we expected and we have just not confirmed a person that can step into that role."

The Union-Recorder reports that residents present at Tuesday’s meeting expressed concern that Hall’s appointment presents a conflict of interest as elected officials are supposed to oversee the work of the county’s professional staff.

County Attorney David McRee told constituents that the appointment is possible because Hall is willing to do the job on a voluntary basis, without receiving any additional compensation.

Hall told WRGC that the county won’t make any significant changes or undertake any new initiatives during what he hopes will be a brief tenure as county manager.

“Mainly i will be there to just be there for the day to day operations, signing appropriate documents that need to be done working with our employees and working with constituents that might have an issue.”

Hall said commissioners hope to hire a new permanent county manager within the next couple of weeks.
