The Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia announced Cathy Cox will be the next president of Georgia’s designated public liberal arts university.

A native of Bainbridge, Cox was the first woman elected Secretary of State in Georgia. She served in that capacity between 1999 and 2007. Prior to that, Cox served two terms in the state House of Representatives.

Cox leaves her current role as dean of the Mercer University School of Law to lead Georgia College. But this will not be her first time leading a liberal arts institution. Cox served 10 years as president of Young Harris College in North Georgia.

Cox will become the 12th president of Georgia College & State University, effective October 1st.
