A member of Baldwin County’s legislative delegation will seek higher office in 2022.

State Senator Burt Jones, a republican from Jackson, filed paperwork last week to run for Lieutenant Governor of Georgia.

Voters in Georgia’s 25th state senatorial district first elected Jones to the Georgia General Assembly in 2012.

Jones is running on a platform focusing on the economy, public safety, election integrity, education and immigration.

The five-term state senator made headlines recently when he published a letter calling on Governor Brian Kemp to ban mask mandates in Georgia schools.

At present, there are three declared candidates seeking the republican party’s nomination to replace outgoing Lt. Governor. Geoff Duncan. They are state Senate President Pro Tem Butch Miller of Gainesville and Republican Party Activist Jeanne Seaver of Savannah.

Six democrats have declared their candidacy for the party primary that will take place in June 2022.
